In a recent webinar, Professor Jeff Dahn shared critical methodologies for maximizing the lifespan of NMC/Graphite (NMC/Gr.) battery systems. He emphasized that High State of Charge (SoC) and Elevated Temperatures are the primary catalysts for battery degradation. This is largely due to the accelerated parasitic reactions between the cathode and electrolyte at high SoC, coupled with the increased kinetics of side reactions under high-thermal stress.

Furthermore, Dahn highlighted the impact of Depth of Discharge (DoD). A larger DoD during cycling leads to more severe capacity decay. This is primarily caused by mechanical micro-cracking of the electrode particles during repeated lithiation/delithiation, which triggers continuous SEI reconstruction and the subsequent irreversible loss of active lithium inventory.

How to Extend the Operational Life of Your EV Battery?

Based on Dahn’s research, the following practical guidelines are recommended:

  1. High-Temperature Storage: If an EV is to remain idle for an extended period during hot summer months, the SoC should be adjusted to approximately 30% to minimize chemical stress.

  2. Optimal Operational Window: For ideal performance and longevity, the daily SoC usage window should ideally be restricted to a 25% range (e.g., maintaining the battery between 40% and 65%).

  3. Upper Charge Limit Control: If the above constraints are impractical, simply limiting the upper cut-off SoC to 75% or below can significantly extend battery life. This can be seamlessly implemented via BMS (Battery Management System) control strategies—similar to the “Optimized Battery Charging” logic used in modern smartphones—eliminating the need for manual monitoring.
